Transport of Delight

* Standard and austerity locomotives
1959-1966 and in preservation

After the formation of British Railways in 1948, 758 Austerity
locomotives- 733 2-8-0s and 25 2-10-0s - were acquired,
200 of them coming via the LNER. Later, between 1951-1960,
BR built 999 standard locomotives in 12 classes ranging
from a single 8P 4-6-2 to 251 9F 2-10-0s.

The majority of these photographs, mainly in black and
white, date from 1959-62. A number of later views -
often in colour - are included of these locomotives
in preservation since they are painted in one of the
liveries employed by BR.

There are 48 photographs (2 * recent) in this gallery.
